The Republic of Vanuatu has about 250,000 people – roughly the same population as New Caledonia, Samoa, Hobart or Sunshine Coast.
This South Pacific nation is an archipelago of over 80 separate islands. It boasts over 100 different languages and cultures amongst its native peoples. It is located on the eastern edge of the Coral Sea, midway between New Caledonia and Fiji. Vanuatu is a Y-shaped chain of islands extending 2200km. The total land area is just over 12,000 km², but the modest population leaves plenty of land for qualified builders to put up residential units, shops, resorts and holiday homes.
Vanuatu’s name is derived from vanua (“land” or “home”) and the word tu (“stand”).[10] Together the two words were chosen to represent the spirit of the country when it became independent in 1980.
Vanuatu is a country of many natural disasters and climactic hazards, meaning qualified builders need to know the conditions intimately and have the ability to carry out renovations and repair following Acts of God.
